From Violence to Prayer Breakthrough
Dr. Ben Carson, born in Detroit on September 18, 1951, faced immense challenges early in life. Growing up in poverty and struggling academically, he was labeled the 'dummy' of his class. However, at age 14, a pivotal incident changed his life forever. In a moment of rage, he nearly stabbed a friend. Terrified by his own actions, Carson retreated to a bathroom where he prayed, 'Lord, you've got to help me. I can't do this.' In that moment of desperation, he realized that real strength was not in violence but in self-control. He emerged with a new resolve: 'My temper will never control me again. I'm free.'
God Changed Violent Temper
Carson's transformation was profound. His academic performance improved, leading him to Yale and later the University of Michigan Medical School. At just 33, he became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His faith remained a cornerstone of his career. Before surgeries, he would pray, 'Lord, you be the neurosurgeon, and I'll be the hands.' This partnership with God led to remarkable achievements, including the first successful separation of twins conjoined at the back of the head in 1987.
Faith-Guided Medical Career
Throughout his journey, Carson has been vocal about the role of faith in his life. He believes that God created us with unique talents and that using these gifts to help others is a way to honor God. 'There isn't anybody in the world who isn't worth something,' he says, emphasizing that his success as a neurosurgeon isn't about being better than others but about sharing the talents God gave him.
Living to Please God
Carson's life is a testament to Jesus' transformative power. From a young boy with a violent temper to a world-renowned surgeon, his story demonstrates how faith can redirect a life towards healing and service to others. 'For me, I only have one person I have to please, and that's God,' Carson asserts, acknowledging the divine intervention that shaped his journey.
