Childhood Faith in Argentina
Luis Palau's journey from a young boy in Maschwitz, Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a renowned evangelist is a testament to the transformative power of Jesus Christ. Born on November 27, 1934, Luis lost his father at the tender age of ten, thrusting his family into financial hardship. But it was at a summer camp in 1947, at age 12, that Luis encountered Jesus in a life-changing way. Led to faith by Charlie Cohen, a young Jewish Christian, he embraced the message of the Gospel.
Wrestling with Teenage Temptations
As a teenager, Luis faced the temptations of the world, wrestling with his faith. Yet, he felt a divine pull, compelling him to pray fervently, 'Lord, if you get me out of this, I will break with the world, and I will serve you.' This promise marked the beginning of a devoted life to Christ.
Called to Global Evangelism Ministry
At age 19, Luis began preaching, and by 1960, he had moved to the United States to study at Multnomah Bible College in Portland, Oregon. It was here that he deepened his understanding of living a life led by Jesus, famously proclaiming, 'Lord, now I understand! I have been crucified with Christβand yet I live! It's not what I'm going to do for You, but rather what You're going to do through me!'
Legacy of Faithful Service
Luis's ministry flourished, reaching more than 80 countries and touching millions through evangelistic campaigns, radio programs, and books. Even when diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer in 2018, Luis remained steadfast in his faith, expressing a desire for others to 'get right with God, settle the big question, and die happy, knowing they will be with Jesus.'
Luis Palau's life and ministry exemplified his deep commitment to sharing the Gospel. Through his journey, he consistently pointed others to Jesus, affirming, 'Don't look at me, I'm a bad example, but look at Jesus Christ. He is the best.' As he passed away on March 11, 2021, in Portland, Oregon, his legacy as a humble servant of Christ endures, inspiring future generations to live for Jesus.
