The Argumentative Atheist
Nicky Gumbel, born in London on April 28, 1955, began life as an 'argumentative atheist.' Raised in Knightsbridge, London, he was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. His father was a German secular Jew, and his mother, a nominal Christian. Despite this background, Gumbel considered himself a 'logical determinist.' He pursued a career in law, becoming a barrister like his father.
An Unexpected Encounter
However, in 1974, during his first year at Cambridge, a pivotal moment occurred when two friends became Christians. Initially worried, Gumbel decided to research faiths, only to find a Bible. As he read the New Testament, he encountered Jesus. In his own words, 'As I read about Jesus, it was as if the person I was reading about in the New Testament emerged from the pages. I had an encounter with Him.' Despite fears of a miserable life, Gumbel took 'a step of faith and became a Christian.' This decision transformed his life.
Leading Millions to Faith
He shifted his studies from economics to law and later felt led to Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB). By 1990, he began leading the Alpha course, which has since reached millions worldwide. Gumbel has authored several best-selling books and remains deeply committed to sharing his faith, stating, 'I was an atheist and I came to experience a relationship with God which had a radically transforming effect on my life.'
