Called from Comfortable Life in Pennsylvania
In 1954, Bernie and Nancy May were living ordinary lives in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, with stable jobs and recent renewed faith. They never imagined themselves as missionaries. But during a church service, missionary Rachel Saint shared her vision to translate the Bible into every language and mentioned the need for a pilot and a secretary. Bernie felt a nudge and joked to Nancy, 'Maybe we ought to do that.' Within weeks, they left their familiar life and embarked on a mission that would change everything.
God Spoke in the Amazon
Bernie became a missionary pilot in South America, mastering the challenges of flying in remote areas, while Nancy adapted to life in the jungle. One poignant Christmas, stranded in an Amazon village, Bernie questioned his place. Lying in his hammock, he felt God speaking to him: 'My son, this is what Christmas is all about. Jesus left heaven to be with you.' This encounter solidified his commitment to their mission.
Prayer for Unreached Peoples Ministry
After 16 years abroad, Bernie returned to the US and became President of Wycliffe USA. He initiated the Bibleless Peoples Prayer Project, urging people to pray for unreached groups. Bernie and Nancy prayed for the Dubu people of Indonesia, and their prayers were answered when a Dubu man embraced faith and brought it to his village.
Legacy of Bible Translation Impact
In 1993, Bernie founded The Seed Company, focusing on empowering local Christians to translate the Bible into their own languages. Despite initial resistance, the initiative thrived. Throughout his life, Bernie emphasized the power of prayer, saying, 'Our life is a gift from God⦠find out which way God's going and go with Him.'
At 91, Bernie received the Lifetime of Service Award, reflecting on his years in Bible translation. He remains grateful for the privilege of witnessing God's work, continuing to pray for those still without the Scriptures. His story is a testament to following God's call and trusting in divine guidance.
