God Called Pastor to New York
In the quiet town of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, a young pastor named David Wilkerson was deeply moved by the image of seven teenage gang members on trial for murder in New York City. It was February 1958, and as he prayed, he felt God clearly instructing him to 'Go to New York City and help those boys.' Compelled by this divine calling, Wilkerson shared his burden with his congregation, who supported his journey to the bustling streets of New York.
Upon arriving in the city, Wilkerson attempted to speak to the judge during the trial, hoping to extend a hand of grace to the troubled teens. Although he was ejected and briefly detained, this bold act captured the attention of the gang members. Despite the initial setbacks, Wilkerson's heart remained steadfast, driving him to resign from his church and move to New York City with his family.
Nicky Cruz Transformation Story
One of the youths David encountered was Nicky Cruz, the fierce leader of the Mau Maus gang. When David told Cruz, 'Jesus loves you, Nicky,' Cruz responded with hostility. Yet, Wilkerson's unwavering love pierced through the walls Cruz had built. 'You could kill me, and cut me into a thousand pieces, and lay them in the street, and every piece would still love you,' David declared. These words, spoken with profound conviction, began to transform Cruz's heart. He later recalled, 'Jesus Christ came into my heart [and] totally changed me that night.'
Teen Challenge Ministry Born
This encounter was the beginning of Teen Challenge, an evangelical Christian recovery program founded by Wilkerson in 1958. Teen Challenge grew from its humble beginnings into a global network, offering hope and transformation to countless individuals trapped in cycles of addiction and crime. The success stories are numerous, with graduates like Megan and Brandon finding freedom and purpose through their faith journey.
Lives Transformed Through Faith
Through David Wilkerson's obedience to God's call, lives were transformed, and a powerful ministry was born. As he once said, 'Our faith is not meant to get us out of a hard place or change our painful condition. Rather, it is meant to reveal God's faithfulness to us in the midst of our dire situation.' Indeed, it was Jesus who intervened through Wilkerson's faith, bringing healing and hope to many.
