Calum Mackenzie: 22 Years of Trying Everything, Then One Desperate Prayer

The Prayer That Broke the Silence

2022🇬🇧United Kingdom

Calum Mackenzie, a pastor's son, abandoned his faith at university and spent 22 years chasing satisfaction through drink, drugs, career and travel. In 2022, at rock bottom and suicidal, one desperate prayer brought him back to Jesus. His wife followed weeks later, and his suicidal thoughts ended within months.

Doxa is where Christians record what God has said and done, and return to remember it.

Calum Mackenzie grew up as a pastor's son in the UK. His father had become a Christian after reading John's Gospel when Calum was six, and as a teenager Calum made his own commitment to Jesus while touring Europe with the Continental Singers. It looked like a settled story. It was not.

In his third year at university, Calum walked away from his faith. What followed was 22 years of trying everything the world could offer. Drink. Drugs. Relationships. Career. Travel. Two marriages ended in divorce. He left teaching when his mental health collapsed. The search for something that satisfied kept coming up empty, and the emptiness got darker. Suicidal thoughts moved in and would not leave.

The Prayer That Broke the Silence

In 2022, Calum hit rock bottom. Alone and desperate, he prayed for the first time in more than two decades. It was not a polished prayer. By his own account it was desperate and laced with expletives. But it was honest, and God heard it.

Calum began reading again, working through Lee Strobel's investigations into the evidence for Jesus. The pastor's son who had spent 22 years running finally stopped and looked at what was actually in front of him. His conclusion was simple: "I can't deny the evidence. It's true and I need your forgiveness."

What Jesus Restored

The change was not only in Calum. Within weeks his wife made her own commitment to Jesus. And within months, the suicidal thoughts that had shadowed him for years were gone. Not managed. Gone. The mind that had been a hostile place became a restored one.

Calum still lives with real limitations. He is largely agoraphobic and rarely leaves his village. But the man who once toured Europe singing about a faith he would later abandon now worships at his local Methodist chapel, has written a book called Grace Notes, and shares Jesus with thousands through social media from the home he seldom leaves.

The Long Way Home

Twenty-two years is a long time to be away. Calum's story is proof that no distance and no duration puts anyone beyond the reach of Jesus. The father in the story of the prodigal son did not wait for a polished speech. He ran while his son was still a long way off. One desperate, unpolished prayer in 2022 was enough.
