A Turbulent Childhood
Born into a turbulent world on December 10, 1952, in Long Beach, California, Greg Laurie faced a challenging childhood. Raised by his single mother, Charlene, who struggled with alcoholism and a series of marriages, Greg sought solace in a life that mirrored the chaos around him. As a teenager, he plunged into the drug culture, using substances like marijuana and LSD in a desperate search for meaning and acceptance.
A Terrifying Vision
At 17, Greg experienced a turning point. During a hallucinogenic episode, he faced a terrifying vision of his own mortality and heard a voice warning him of his impending death. This haunting experience forced him to confront the emptiness of his choices. 'I don't want to do drugs anymore, I hate this, I hate this life I've chosen,' he realized, yearning for a change.
Encountering the Jesus Movement
The transformation began on the campus of Newport Harbor High School, where he encountered Lonnie Frisbee, a charismatic evangelist of the Jesus Movement. Drawn initially by a girl named Chrissy, Greg found himself captivated by Frisbee's message, which spoke directly to his weary soul. In 1970, he prayed a simple prayer, inviting Jesus into his life, and this decision set him on a radically new path.
From Bible Study to Megachurch
Under the mentorship of Chuck Smith at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, Greg's newfound faith transformed into action. By age 19, he was preaching, and by 20, he was leading a small Bible study in Riverside, California. This study blossomed into Harvest Christian Fellowship, one of the largest churches in the United States.
Reaching Millions Through Crusades
In 1990, Greg expanded his ministry through Harvest Crusades, drawing millions worldwide to hear the Gospel. He also reached audiences through his radio program, *A New Beginning*, and television show, *Harvest with Greg Laurie*. Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of his son, Greg has consistently found strength in his relationship with God. 'God was with us... The Lord has helped us and is helping us through it,' he shared, demonstrating his enduring faith.
Greg's journey from a troubled youth to a passionate evangelist is a testament to the transformative power of Jesus. Through all of life's challenges, Greg has found purpose and fulfillment in his faith, sharing the hope and love he discovered with countless others.
