In the mid-1960s, Timor, Indonesia, became the epicenter of a spiritual awakening, and at the heart of it was Mel Tari. Despite attending church for 19 years, Tari found himself battling malaria for three to four years, questioning why his faith had not brought him healing. "Lord, how come I have gone to church for 19 years? I got this malaria for three-four years now and nothing happened?" Tari wondered.
God Spoke Audibly at Church
On September 26, 1965, during a prayer service at Maranatha Church in Soe, Tari experienced a life-changing encounter. As the congregation gathered, a powerful presence filled the room, and Tari heard an audible voice: "Mel, this is your problem, you have gone to church for 19 years and that's good, but your problem is you are not my child yet." This revelation marked the beginning of Tari's genuine relationship with Jesus.
Indonesia Revival Brings Miraculous Signs
The revival that swept across Indonesia was characterized by extraordinary events. During one service, the police station across the street sounded the fire alarm, believing the church was ablazeโonly to find it was the "fire of God." This moment led to mass repentance and profound changes in the lives of those present.
Witnesses reported miraculous acts: the dead raised, water turning into wine, and countless healings, including the blind seeing and the deaf hearing. Even witchdoctors turned to Christ after witnessing the power of God. Through these events, Tari's faith deepened, and he embraced Jesus as his savior.
Churchgoer Becomes Global Evangelist
Transformed by his experiences, Tari became a prominent evangelist, sharing his story with thousands worldwide. He authored "Like a Mighty Wind," documenting the revival and emphasizing a simple, childlike faith in God's Word. For over five decades, Tari testified to God's healing power, never again succumbing to illness.
Mel Tari's journey from nominal faith to a dynamic relationship with Jesus reminds us of the transformative power of embracing God's call. His life stands as a testament to the incredible things God can do when we open our hearts to Him.
