β€œI don't remember what he said, but I can feel the power of that man's hand on my shoulder tonight.”
19th-century Chicago: A shoe store worker becomes evangelist after his Sunday school teacher led to Christ. Dwight Moody testimony conversion.

Dwight Lyman Moody's journey from a struggling young man to a renowned evangelist is a story of profound transformation through faith. Born in Northfield, Massachusetts in 1837, Moody faced hardships early in life. His father passed away when Moody was just four years old, leaving his mother to care for nine children amidst financial difficulties. Moody's formal education ended in the fifth grade, and at seventeen, he moved to Boston to work at his uncle's shoe store, with the condition that he attend Mt. Vernon Congregational Church.

Early Struggles with Faith

Moody's early encounters with faith were fraught with difficulty. His Sunday school teacher, Edward Kimball, described him as spiritually dark, and the church hesitated to accept him due to his limited biblical knowledge. Moody himself admitted to struggling with scripture and having worldly habits, including a propensity for swearing.

Dwight Moody's Life-Changing Encounter

The turning point came on April 21, 1855, when Kimball visited Moody at the Holton Shoe Store. In a stockroom, Kimball shared the message of Jesus' love. Despite feeling his words were inadequate, Kimball's message reached Moody's heart. Moody later reflected, 'I don't remember what he said, but I can feel the power of that man's hand on my shoulder tonight.' That day, Moody trusted Jesus and committed his life to Him.

Instant Transformation and New Joy

The transformation was immediate. Moody described waking up the next morning to a world that seemed brighter, where even the birds' songs resonated with him in a new way. He said, 'I fell in love with the birds. I had never cared for them before.' This sense of renewal and joy marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

From Shoe Store to Ministry

In 1856, Moody moved to Chicago, where he started a Mission Sunday School for children in need and joined the YMCA. His passion for souls grew, and he transitioned from business to full-time ministry. Moody's efforts led to the foundation of the Illinois Street Church in 1864, and he ministered to Union soldiers during the Civil War.

A significant experience of God's power in 1871 further empowered his ministry, allowing him to preach with newfound effectiveness, resulting in many conversions. Moody became an internationally acclaimed evangelist, preaching in the United States and the United Kingdom, leaving a legacy through educational institutions he founded.

Moody's life is a testament to the transformative power of Jesus, who took hold of a young man burdened by his shortcomings and turned him into a beacon of faith and hope for countless others. Moody's story continues to inspire, reminding us of the difference Christ can make in a life truly surrendered to Him.
