An Argumentative Atheist at Cambridge
Born in London, England, in 1955, Nicky Gumbel grew up the son of German Jewish parents who fled Nazi Germany. As a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was known as an 'argumentative atheist' who avoided Christians, seeing them as 'suspicious people.' ## Reading the New Testament Changes Everything
Gumbel's life took an unexpected turn during his first year at university in 1974. Despite his skepticism, he picked up the New Testament and began reading. As he recounted, 'As I read about Jesus, it was as if the person I was reading about emerged from the pages. I had an encounter with Him.' This transformative moment marked the beginning of his relationship with Jesus, a shift from a life rooted in logic and atheism to one filled with faith and purpose.
Convinced that becoming a Christian would lead to a 'miserable' life, Gumbel initially resisted the change. However, his experience of God's love and the realization that his life had a purpose changed everything. He felt compelled to leave his career as a barrister, where he practiced law from 1977 to 1983, to pursue theological studies at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Gumbel's journey wasn't without its challenges. After completing his studies, he encountered difficulties in finding a parish willing to take him on. But God had plans, and in 1986, he became a curate at Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) in London.
Gumbel's leadership and vision transformed the Alpha course, which began at HTB in 1977. In 1990, he reimagined the course to reach those outside the church, emphasizing openness and dialogue. 'Alpha is a place where you can be yourself, say what you think, and challenge everything,' he explained. This approach resonated globally, making the Alpha course a cornerstone of the church's evangelism efforts.
Through his journey, Nicky Gumbel found that what truly matters is not what you do but who you are. His commitment to reading the Bible each year reinforced his faith and provided daily guidance. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the community and purpose he found through his faith. Jesus had not only transformed his life but also used him to reach countless others through the Alpha course. Gumbel's story is a testament to the power of Jesus to change lives, offering hope and purpose where there was once doubt and skepticism.
