The Khmer Rouge's Devastation

During the terrifying era of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, the country was engulfed in a wave of persecution and genocide. The regime, led by Pol Pot, sought to dismantle religion, targeting Christians among many others. The devastation was vastβ€”of the 10,000 estimated Protestant Christians, only a few hundred survived the brutal regime.

Sokreaksa Himm: Finding Forgiveness

Sokreaksa Himm, one of the survivors, bore witness to these atrocities. He endured the pain of seeing his entire family massacred. Yet, amidst this darkness, Sokreaksa found hope. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, he encountered the teachings of Jesus and embraced Christianity. Through his new faith, Sokreaksa found the strength to forgive those who had taken everything from him. He shared, 'Forgiveness freed me from the chains of bitterness and hate.'

Norng Chhay: From Soldier to Believer

Similarly, Norng Chhay, once a soldier for the Khmer Rouge, experienced a profound transformation. He was recruited into the regime as a young teenager and witnessed countless acts of brutality. However, in 2000, he encountered the message of the Gospel. Matthew 7:1, 'Do not judge others, and you will not be judged,' resonated deeply with him. This scripture became a turning point, leading him to a path of redemption and reconciliation.

Im Chaem: A New Beginning

Im Chaem, another former Khmer Rouge official, found redemption in Christianity under the guidance of Pastor Christopher LaPel, a fellow survivor. On November 6, 2017, she became a Christian, declaring, 'I was redeemed...I have never used violence or threatened anyone.' Her story is a testament to the possibility of transformation and new beginnings.

Revival in Cambodia

The post-Khmer Rouge period saw a remarkable revival. In refugee camps in Thailand, many Cambodians heard the Gospel for the first time. The small remnant that survived has grown into a vibrant community of faith, now numbering approximately 250,000 Christians in Cambodia. These stories of survival and transformation highlight the resilience of faith amidst adversity, as Jesus brought hope and healing to a wounded nation.
