Betrayal Shatters 25-Year Marriage
In February 2016, Lysa TerKeurst's world was shaken to its core. She discovered that her husband, Art, had been unfaithful to her during their nearly 25-year marriage. As she explained, "My husband, life partner and father of my children, Art TerKeurst, has been repeatedly unfaithful to me with a woman he met online, bringing an end to our marriage of almost 25 years." The betrayal, compounded by Art's substance abuse, was heart-wrenching. Yet, Lysa's faith in God became her anchor.
Clinging to God's Goodness
Despite the overwhelming sorrow, Lysa clung to her belief in God's unwavering goodness. "We don't serve a do-nothing God. God is always doing something, and that something is always pointed in the direction of good," she reflected. The journey to healing was not easy. She faced her future, which looked nothing like what she had prayed for, with bravery and trust in God's plans.
Learning Forgiveness with Boundaries
Lysa understood the need for forgiveness and boundaries. In her words, "When Jesus said to 'Forgive 70 times seven,' He didn't mean to stand close to that person who's hurt us." She learned to forgive while also protecting her heart and well-being. Her faith community provided essential support, reminding her that she didn't have to walk this path alone.
Restored Purpose and Faith
Through the pain, Lysa discovered a renewed sense of purpose and strength. She moved from a place of grieving to embracing life with gratitude and determination. "What threatened to break me only served to make me more determined. I will live this life God entrusted to me with integrity and gratitude and wonder."
Ultimately, it was not the circumstances but her unwavering faith in Jesus that brought about transformation. Lysa's testimony is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, God's love and faithfulness can lead to profound restoration. She credits Jesus with guiding her through this trial and bringing her to a place of peace and joy.
