From Violent Beginnings to Gang Leadership
Nicky Cruz's life was marked by turmoil and violence from a young age. Born on December 6, 1938, in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, he experienced severe abuse within a family steeped in witchcraft. His mother, in a trance, once called him the 'Son of Satan.' At just nine years old, despair led him to attempt suicide. In 1954, at the age of 15, Nicky was sent to New York City to live with his brother. Quickly, he drifted into a life of crime, becoming a prominent figure in the Mau Maus, a notorious Brooklyn street gang.
The Life-Changing Encounter with David Wilkerson
By 16, Nicky ruled the streets with fear and violence. His life took a pivotal turn in 1958 when he encountered David Wilkerson, a preacher from Pennsylvania. Wilkerson fearlessly approached Nicky, declaring, 'Jesus loves you.' Nicky, full of anger, threatened him, but Wilkerson persisted. 'You could kill me, and cut me into a thousand pieces,' Wilkerson told Nicky, 'and every piece would still love you.' These words struck a chord deep within Nicky.
Gang Member Salvation Transformation
Later, at a rally organized by Wilkerson at St. Nicholas Arena, Nicky experienced a profound transformation. He recalls, 'I came to Jesus because I knew He loved me, and still didn't know anything about God.' That night, Nicky prayed, asking for forgiveness, and felt the weight of his past lift away. Jesus had intervened, turning a hardened gang leader into a humble servant.
From Street Violence to Gospel Ministry
Following his conversion, Nicky renounced his violent past. He and other former gang members surrendered their weapons to the police. Nicky attended Bible college, deepening his understanding of the faith that had transformed him. In 1961, he married Gloria and began a ministry that would take him back to the streets he once ruled, now preaching the Gospel.
Nicky's story reached millions through his autobiography, 'Run Baby Run,' and the film 'The Cross and the Switchblade.' Today, through Nicky Cruz Outreach and TRUCE, he continues to share his testimony, offering hope and redemption to troubled youth. His life is a testament to the power of Jesus to heal and transform even the most broken hearts.
