Billy Graham Conversion Experience
George Verwer, born in Wyckoff, New Jersey, had a reputation for mischief in his youth. His life took a dramatic turn at a Billy Graham meeting in 1955 when he had a profound conversion experience. Guided by the prayers of Dorothea Clapp, who had given him the Gospel of John, George embraced a new faith in Jesus Christ. His commitment was immediate and ferventβwithin a year, around 200 of his classmates had also become Christians.
First Missions Trip to Mexico
Inspired to evangelize, Verwer embarked on his first missions trip to Mexico in 1957, distributing thousands of Christian tracts. This mission marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to spreading the Gospel. Alongside Walter Borchard and Dale Rhoton, George sold his possessions to fund their outreach, witnessing God's provision when a gas station attendant provided fuel for their journey.
Founding Operation Mobilisation
In 1961, Verwer founded Operation Mobilisation (OM), aiming to mobilize young people to share the message of Jesus. By 1963, OM had expanded across Europe and into India. Under George's leadership, the organization pioneered innovative outreach methods, including the launch of the ship ministry with MV Logos in 1970, which brought literature and aid to port cities worldwide.
A Legacy of Grace
Verwer's openness about his imperfections was a hallmark of his ministry. He famously said, "I am a sinner, who's growing stronger through the years, who crawls back to the cross when he sins and finds God still loves him and will still use him to bring others to Christ. That's grace, isn't it?"
George Verwer passed away on April 14, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of faith-driven service and an enduring impact through Operation Mobilisation. His life is a testament to the power of prayer, the transformative love of Jesus, and the extraordinary ways God can use even the most unlikely individuals for His purposes.
