Liu Zhenying, known as Brother Yun, was first arrested at age 17 for sharing the gospel in communist China. He would be arrested numerous times and thrown into prison three times. Each arrest brought new levels of torture.
Supernatural Fasting 74 Days
During his first imprisonment, Brother Yun felt God calling him to fast without food and water until he could see his family again. This fast lasted 74 days—humanly impossible, yet made possible through obedience to God.
The title "Heavenly Man" came from one night of interrogation when he would only answer "I am a Heavenly Man!" instead of revealing his true name, protecting other Christians from the police.
Broken Legs and Brutal Torture
In March 1997, at age 39, Brother Yun was ambushed at a house church leaders meeting. He lunged out of a second-floor window to escape, breaking both legs. The guards beat his legs until they turned completely black, wanting to cripple him permanently. In prison, other brothers had to carry him around.
Then came the miracle.
Miraculous Prison Escape Testimony
On May 5, 1997, God instructed him to escape. Brother Yun walked past dozens of guards and out of the maximum security prison—invisible to them all. He didn't realize his legs had been miraculously healed until later.
The official Chinese government investigation concluded that Brother Yun received no human help in his escape and therefore should remain free. He is reportedly the only person to have escaped from that notorious prison.
Ministry Around the World
After fleeing China, Brother Yun took asylum in Germany. His autobiography, "The Heavenly Man," won "Christian Book of the Year" in the UK in 2003. Despite controversy, three eyewitness pastors who were arrested with him have consistently verified his account of the miraculous escape.
Today Brother Yun travels the world, calling the church to radical faith and obedience.
