From Tuberculosis to God's Calling

Henry Parsons Crowell was an extraordinary man who combined his business acumen with a deep commitment to his Christian faith, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 27, 1855, Henry faced the painful loss of his father at a young age. This loss led him to a personal faith in Jesus Christ. By the age of 17, Henry's life took another challenging turn when he contracted tuberculosis. Doctors advised him to seek a warmer climate for recovery, prompting his move to the Western States.

During this period of uncertainty, Henry attended a sermon by the renowned evangelist D.L. Moody, who challenged him to 'think big.' Inspired, Henry prayed a simple yet profound prayer: 'God, if You will let me make money, I will use it in Your service.' Trusting in God's plan, he embarked on a physical journey that also restored his health over seven years.

Building the Quaker Oats Empire

Henry's business ventures began with farming in the Dakotas, where he demonstrated a knack for entrepreneurship. In 1881, he acquired a mill in Cleveland, which would become the foundation of Quaker Oats. He transformed oats from mere horse feed into a staple breakfast cereal, introducing innovative packaging and pioneering advertising strategies that made Quaker Oats a household name.

Giving 60 Percent of Income

Throughout his life, Henry remained committed to his promise to God, giving 60-70% of his income to Christian causes. His generosity extended to the establishment of the Henry Parsons and Susan Coleman Crowell Trust in 1927, which supported over 100 Christian organizations. Serving as chairman of the Moody Bible Institute's board for 40 years, his influence reached far beyond business.

Henry's story is a testament to the power of faith in action. Jesus was at the heart of every success and decision Henry made. His life demonstrates how integrating faith into business can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Crowell passed away on October 22, 1943, leaving behind a legacy of faith and generosity that continues to inspire generations.
