Troubled Child Predicted for Prison
Howard Hendricks was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 5, 1924, into a challenging environment. Raised by his grandmother after his parents separated, young Hendricks was often labeled a troublemaker in school. A fifth-grade teacher even predicted he would end up in prison. However, his life took a pivotal turn at the age of nine when he met Walt, a man who showed him love and introduced him to Christ. This encounter marked the beginning of Hendricks' transformation.
God Transforms Troubled Youth
In his sixth-grade year, another turning point occurred when his teacher declared, 'I've heard a lot about you, but I don't believe a word of it.' This statement sparked hope and motivation in Hendricks, driving him to pursue a path of change. He soon discovered a passion for studying and teaching the Bible, which became the cornerstone of his life's work.
Becoming a Seminary Professor
Hendricks pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College in 1946 and a Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) in 1950. He joined the faculty of DTS in 1951 and spent over 60 years teaching and mentoring future Christian leaders. His commitment to teaching was unwavering. As he once said, 'I discovered long ago that teaching is my spiritual gift. If you take me out of the classroom, I lose my reason for existence.'
Legacy of Transformation Ministry
Throughout his career, Hendricks was known for his dynamic teaching style and personal investment in his students. He believed in the transformative power of God, reflecting, 'I think the reason God has used me is that, by His grace, the Holy Spirit has developed in me an incurable confidence in His ability to transform people.'
Hendricks' legacy is evident in the countless Christian leaders he mentored, many of whom continue to impact the world for Christ. His passion for Scripture and commitment to teaching have left an indelible mark on the lives of those he taught.
Howard Hendricks passed away on February 20, 2013, in Dallas, Texas. His life stands as a testament to the power of God's intervention and transformation, a life lived with purpose and faith.
