Conversion from Doubt to Faith
Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, on May 21, 1832, Hudson Taylor grew up in a devout Methodist family. Despite his religious upbringing, Taylor experienced a period of doubt during his teenage years while working as a bank clerk. Influenced by skeptical colleagues, he questioned his faith. At 17, a transformative moment occurred when he read a Gospel tract titled 'Poor Richard' and was struck by the phrase 'the finished work of Christ.' In his words, 'light was flashed into my soul by the Holy Spirit,' leading him to accept Jesus as his Savior. Unbeknownst to him, his mother was 70 miles away, praying fervently for his conversion, and his sister had been praying for him as well.
Missionary Calling to China
Following his conversion, Taylor felt a strong calling to become a missionary to China. He prepared by studying Mandarin, theology, and medicine. In 1853, he sailed to Shanghai, immersing himself in Chinese culture by adopting local customs, which was unconventional at the time. Taylor's commitment to identifying with the Chinese people was a key aspect of his mission.
God Provided for Mission Work
In 1865, after a profound experience on Brighton beach, Taylor founded the China Inland Mission (CIM), aiming to evangelize all of China's provinces. The CIM was based on principles of financial dependence on God, cultural immersion, and a non-denominational approach. Despite facing persecution, illness, and financial challenges, Taylor remained steadfast in his faith. He often remarked, 'God isn't looking for people of great faith, but for individuals ready to follow Him.'
Legacy of Faithful Service
Taylor's reliance on God led to miraculous interventions, such as a timely rainstorm in 1854 that saved him from a fire. Under his leadership, the CIM grew rapidly, establishing over 300 stations and leading to 25,000 Christian converts by 1905.
Hudson Taylor's legacy is a testament to unwavering trust in God's provision. He once said, 'God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply.' His life continues to inspire believers to trust in God and actively participate in spreading the Gospel.
