Pastor Imprisoned in Turkey
Andrew Brunson, a dedicated pastor from Black Mountain, North Carolina, spent over two decades in Turkey with his wife, Norine, sharing the message of Jesus. Their journey took an unexpected turn on October 7, 2016, when Andrew was arrested under the false pretense of a routine visa meeting. He was charged with espionage and terrorism, accusations he vehemently denied, stating, "I am an innocent man. I love Jesus. I love Turkey."
Fighting for Faith in Prison
For two years, Andrew endured harsh conditions, including solitary confinement and sharing a cell with 21 other inmates in a space meant for eight. He faced a profound crisis of faith, feeling isolated and abandoned by God. Yet, in the midst of despair, he clung to his faith. "I began to focus myself on God and fight for my faith," he recalled. "If I lose this, then I've lost everything in my life."
Global Prayer Movement for Release
Despite the darkness, a global prayer movement arose, interceding for his release. In a significant diplomatic effort, the U.S. government intervened, leading to his eventual release on October 12, 2018. After returning to the United States, Andrew's faith was not diminished but strengthened. "God has redeemed it," he said of his ordeal. "My faith has deepened as I went through this."
Ministry Strengthened Through Persecution
Andrew now focuses on encouraging others facing persecution, emphasizing the importance of standing firm in faith. "One of the purposes God had in my imprisonment was that I learn how to stand under pressure," he shared. Through his ministry, WaveStarters, he continues to spread the love of Jesus, embodying forgiveness and hope for the future.
