Doxa is where Christians record what God has said and done, and return to remember it.

These are accounts of God at work inside prison walls: among people serving sentences, among those who worked there, and among prisoners of conscience held for their faith. The settings run from Roman custody to Soviet labour camps to contemporary remand wings.

Prison recurs in Scripture more than most readers notice. A substantial part of the New Testament was written from custody, and the pattern of a confined person continuing to encourage people outside runs directly through these accounts.

Two kinds of record sit here together. The first is conversion and change among people serving sentences, including men and women who went on to spend decades working with prisoners after release. The second is imprisonment for faith itself, which is still current in a number of countries and is represented here by contemporary accounts as well as historical ones.

Accounts from closed countries are held to the same sourcing standard as the rest, which sometimes means a name is withheld in the source and the record says so.

Why do so many conversions happen in prison?

The accounts themselves suggest two things. Prison removes the distractions and the social cost that keep a lot of people from examining the question at all, and it puts a person in sustained contact with the consequences of their own life in a way ordinary circumstances rarely do. Several accounts also credit something more practical: chaplains and volunteers who kept turning up over years, for people whose families had stopped.
