Jason McCarthy: The Footballer Who Heard God Say 'I'm Proud of You'

Coffee, Questions and a Seed

Early 2020s🇬🇧High Wycombe, England, United Kingdom

Professional footballer Jason McCarthy made football his god until trauma at Barnsley left him searching. Through teammates at Wycombe Wanderers who shared Jesus over daily coffees, and an audible voice from God while driving, he found faith in the early 2020s, confirmed through answered prayer and a dream that led to Psalm 91.

Doxa is where Christians record what God has said and done, and return to remember it.

Jason McCarthy came through the Southampton academy with football as the centre of his world. By his own admission, football was his god. It gave him identity, purpose and worth, right up until it started taking more than it gave.

At Barnsley, in his early twenties, life unravelled. He was held at knifepoint. He was assaulted in a nightclub. His home was burgled. His uncle and grandfather died in the same week, and his father sank into depression. The game he had built his life on had no answers for any of it.

Coffee, Questions and a Seed

The seed had been planted earlier by George Moncur, a teammate who talked openly about Jesus. But it was at Wycombe Wanderers that the seed was watered. Teammates Alex Samuel and Ben Frempah met Jason for coffee day after day, talking about who Jesus is and what He offers. No pressure. No script. Just two footballers who knew Jesus and one who was starting to wonder.

Then came the moment Jason still struggles to describe. Driving alone, he heard a voice, audible and unmistakable: "Jason, my son, I'm proud of you and I love you." The identity football had never been able to give him was handed to him in one sentence from God.

Psalm 91 and a Wedding

What followed reads like a series of confirmations. His fiancee Zara prayed he would score a free kick, something he simply did not do, and he scored one. Zara then had a dream containing the phrase "Ederson 91", which led the couple to Psalm 91, the psalm about dwelling in the shelter of the Most High. The confirmations did their work. Rather than wait two more years as planned, Jason and Zara married within weeks.

His family, his fiancee and his teammates initially thought he had lost the plot. He kept going anyway. Today Jason and Zara are raising their son George, and Jason talks openly about the faith that replaced football as the foundation of his life.

The God Who Speaks

Jason McCarthy's story is striking because of how ordinary the setting was. Not a church service. Not a crusade. A car, a coffee shop, a training ground. Jesus met a professional footballer in the middle of his working life and spoke the words every son wants to hear. Football gave Jason a career. Jesus gave him a Father.
