John Piper's journey began in Chattanooga, Tennessee, born to Bill and Ruth Piper on January 11, 1946. His father's role as a traveling evangelist deeply influenced John's early life and faith. At just six years old, during a family vacation in Florida, John experienced a profound transformation. Though he doesn't remember the event, he believes that God intervened, as he later recounted, 'God saved me out of a life of drugs and crime and sex when I was six years old.' This marked the beginning of a faith journey that would shape his entire life.
John's pursuit of faith led him to Wheaton College, where he majored in Literature and met his future wife, NoΓ«l. In 1966, while bedridden with mononucleosis, he felt a powerful calling to ministry through a radio sermon by Pastor Harold John Ockenga. His heart 'exploded with longing' to preach, setting him on a path to theological studies at Fuller Theological Seminary and the University of Munich.
In 1980, John became the pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. Known for his bold preaching, he emphasized God's supremacy through what he termed 'Christian Hedonism,' the belief that 'God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.' His book, *Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist*, published in 1986, brought this message to a wider audience.
John's ministry expanded through Desiring God Ministries, founded in 1994, aiming to spread a passion for God's supremacy globally. Despite challenges, including a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2006, John's faith remained steadfast. He continued to serve until stepping down as pastor in 2013, but his influence persists through his writings and online resources.
John Piper's life is a testament to Jesus' transformative power, from a child at his mother's knee to a pastor leading many to find joy in God. He credits his journey to the divine intervention that ignited his faith and continues to guide his purpose.
