A Diving Accident Changes Everything
In the summer of 1967, Joni Eareckson Tada's life changed forever. At just 17 years old, a diving accident in the Chesapeake Bay left her paralyzed from the shoulders down. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Joni was the youngest of four sisters and enjoyed an active life filled with horseback riding, tennis, and swimming. Just weeks before beginning college, her carefree world was turned upside down.
Finding Purpose Through Paralysis
Joni's injury was severe, fracturing her fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae. As she began to grapple with her new reality, she faced a profound crisis of faith. She endured anger, depression, and even suicidal thoughts during her two-year rehabilitation. Joni recalled the despair, saying she "desperately wanted to kill myself.... Why on earth should a person be forced to live out such a dreary existence?" It was a period marked by immense spiritual and emotional turmoil.
A turning point came when a friend gently suggested that perhaps there was a purpose to her suffering. This prompted Joni to reconsider her perspective, leading her to discover a deep sense of gratitude and faith in Jesus Christ. She embraced 1 Thessalonians 5:18, choosing to give thanks in all circumstances, which gradually transformed her outlook.
During occupational therapy, Joni learned to paint with a brush held between her teeth. This newfound skill not only lifted her spirits but also sparked a sense of purpose. Her paintings became a testament to her resilience and faith. As Joni delved deeper into her relationship with God, she realized that her quadriplegia allowed her to connect with Jesus in a tender, personal way.
In 1979, Joni founded Joni and Friends, a ministry dedicated to supporting people with disabilities. The organization has since delivered over 225,000 wheelchairs and Bibles to individuals in developing countries, impacting millions worldwide. Joniβs life and ministry have become a beacon of hope and evidence of divine purpose amidst profound challenges.
Reflecting on her journey, Joni said, "The weaker I am, the harder I must lean on God's grace; the harder I lean on him, the stronger I discover him to be." Through her story, itβs clear that Jesus has been her source of strength, transforming her life and allowing her to touch countless others with His love.
