Called from University
Li Tianen's journey of faith began when he was a university student. Sensing a strong call from God, he left his studies to attend seminary in Kaifeng, Henan. His path took him through theological training in Nanjing and Hangzhou, leading him to serve in local churches across China.
A Light in Troubled Times
In 1950, shortly after graduating, Li began his ministry in regions such as Nanjing, Hangzhou, and Shangzhou. Despite the increasing challenges, he remained steadfast in his mission, embodying what many described as 'the root of the church in Henan and the light of the church in Shanghai.'
Facing the Firing Squad
Li's commitment to spreading the message of Jesus led to severe consequences. He was imprisoned four times for his faith, enduring over a decade behind bars. During the Cultural Revolution in 1973, Li was sentenced to death for evangelism. He faced the firing squad three times, yet each time he was miraculously spared—a testament to the divine intervention that marked his life.
A Lifelong Witness
After the Cultural Revolution, Li resumed his ministry with renewed vigor. He traveled across China, preaching and serving in churches, undeterred by the threats he faced. Even in his later years, he continued to be a beacon of faith until his passing on May 3, 2016, in Shanghai. Those who knew him often remarked, 'His whole life was a witness to Christ. He leaves for us a good example and a message on how to live.' Li Tianen's story is not just one of survival but of unwavering dedication to his faith. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and in the ongoing house church movement in China, a movement that continues to thrive despite persecution. Through Li's life, Jesus' power to save and transform is evident, and his story is a testimony to the strength found in unwavering faith.
