Life in the Colombo Crime Family
Michael Franzese, born on May 27, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, was steeped in the world of organized crime from a young age. Being the son of John 'Sonny' Franzese, a notorious underboss of the Colombo crime family, Michael was not a stranger to the mob life. Initially drawn into this dark world to help his family, Michael left his pre-med studies to pursue a life that promised wealth and power. By the 1980s, he was generating millions weekly through schemes that defrauded the government, earning him the nickname 'Yuppie Don.'
Prison Conversion Transforms Everything
But beneath the wealth and influence, Michael grappled with moral conflicts. He admitted, 'When you were called upon to do certain things, I did things that I honestly was not comfortable with.' His life took a pivotal turn when legal troubles caught up with him, leading to a 10-year prison sentence in 1986. It was during this time that Michael encountered God in a profound way. In the solitude of his cell, he was given a Bible by a prison guard. Reflecting on this period, he said, 'There's only me and God in this cell... I came out of there believing with all my heart that the Bible is God's word and that Jesus was my risen savior.'
Love Opens Heart to Jesus
Meeting Camille Garcia in 1984, a Christian woman who spoke to him about Jesus, also played a crucial role in his transformation. Michael's love for Camille opened his heart to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He shared, 'If I'm going to believe in the Christian faith, then I have to believe that Jesus really died for the forgiveness of all sins, that includes mine.'
From Mafia to Ministry Life
Released from prison in 1994 and retiring from the mob in 1995, Michael embarked on a new path. He moved to California, not to hide, but to start anew with his family. He became a motivational speaker and author, using his story to inspire others. 'My mission is to share with people not that I have converted myself, but that Jesus Christ has the power to transform ANYONE'S life,' he declared. Despite facing threats and challenges, Michael's faith remained unshaken.
Michael Franzese's journey from a feared mobster to a devoted follower of Jesus illustrates the transformative power of faith. His story is a testament to Jesus' ability to redeem and renew even the most unlikely lives.
