Marvin Serra, 32, was baptized in Chambery, France as part of the historic wave of adult Catholic baptisms sweeping through the country. His journey from committed atheist to baptized Catholic is a powerful testimony to the unexpected ways God draws people to Himself.
Life as a Committed Atheist
Marvin grew up in a multicultural suburb of Paris with friends of different faiths. He attended Catholic school, but it made little impression on him at the time. He chose to be an atheist and was quite hostile to religious belief.
His worldview began to shift when he realized that his materialist philosophy was responsible for the loss of many shared cultural values - values he saw as essential for family and our capacity to love.
Turin Shroud Evidence Changes Everything
The breakthrough came when Marvin encountered compelling evidence online for the authenticity of the Turin Shroud and eucharistic miracles. This evidence shook his faith in materialism and opened him to the possibility that the supernatural was real.
"These discoveries made me question everything I thought I knew," Marvin reflects. The intellectual journey led to a spiritual one, and in 2025, he was among the record 10,384 adults baptized in France at Easter - a 45% increase from the previous year.
France's Quiet Revival Movement
Marvin's story is particularly significant because France, once considered one of Europe's most secular countries, is now experiencing what many call a "Quiet Revival." The 18-25 age group now represents 42% of adult catechumens - the largest demographic among new converts.
