Early Struggles with Identity
Christopher Yuan's journey is a testament to the transformative power of Jesus Christ. Born to Chinese immigrant parents in the United States, Christopher struggled with his identity from a young age, experiencing same-sex attraction at the age of nine. In his early 20s, while attending dental school in Louisville, Kentucky, he came out to his parents, which led to a painful ultimatum and feelings of rejection. His parents, then not yet Christians, couldn't accept his revelation, and Christopher found himself at odds with the values they had instilled in him.
Descent into Drug Dealing
This internal conflict led Christopher into a world of drugs and promiscuity. After being expelled from dental school, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he became involved in drug dealing, supplying substances to dealers across numerous states. His life spiraled further as he engaged in frequent, anonymous relationships, feeling invincible and like he was his own god. Reflecting on this time, Christopher said, "I had exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and I began worshipping and serving the creature rather than the creator."
Prison to Ministry Transformation
Christopher's life took a dramatic turn when he was arrested for drug possession and distribution, leading to a six-year prison sentence. Shortly after, he received an HIV-positive diagnosis, marking the lowest point in his life. Meanwhile, his parents had become Christians and began fervently praying for his salvation. His mother, in particular, prayed and fasted every Monday for seven years, expressing her hope through the prayer, "Lord, do whatever it takes to bring this prodigal son to you."
In prison, Christopher found a Gideon New Testament in a trash can. What began as reading out of boredom soon turned into a journey of conviction and revelation. The scriptures spoke to him, particularly Jeremiah 29:11, which promised a future and hope. Christopher realized his identity should be in Jesus Christ, not his sexuality. He understood that unconditional love from God didn't mean unconditional approval of his actions.
Life Redeemed Through Christ
Christopher surrendered his life to Jesus and felt called to ministry. His prison sentence was reduced to three years, allowing him to pursue education and ministry preparation. He was accepted into Moody Bible Institute and later earned advanced degrees from Wheaton College and Bethel Seminary. Today, Christopher is a Bible professor, speaker, and author, sharing his story worldwide. He has dedicated his life to teaching about faith and sexuality, emphasizing that true identity and holiness come from a relationship with Jesus.
Christopher's journey from a life of rebellion to one of purpose is a powerful reminder of God's grace and redemption. His story challenges us to seek our identity in Christ alone and to embrace a life transformed by the gospel.
