R.C. Sproul's College Conversion Story
In September 1957, a young R.C. Sproul arrived at Westminster College, more interested in football and socializing than matters of faith. But everything changed when he met the captain of the football team, a man who spoke of Christ as a living reality. This was a novel concept to Sproul, who had never encountered such a genuine expression of faith. Curious, he began exploring the Bible, and one night he stumbled upon Ecclesiastes 11:3: 'Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there will it lie.' This verse struck him profoundly. As Sproul later reflected, 'I saw myself as a log that was rotting in the woods. And I was going nowhere.'
Finding Faith Through Scripture
That evening, alone in his dorm room, Sproul knelt down in the dark and prayed for the first time, asking God for forgiveness. 'My experience was one of transcendent forgiveness,' he recalled. Overwhelmed by God's mercy and grace, Sproul's life took a dramatic turn. No longer just a college freshman with a football dream, he felt a deep awakening to a life with Christ.
Life Transformed by Ministry
This encounter led Sproul to become a renowned theologian and pastor. In 1971, he founded Ligonier Ministries in Ligonier Valley, Pennsylvania, to teach others about the Bible and Christian theology. He emphasized that God's holiness touches every part of life, from economics to romance. Through his books, broadcasts, and teachings, Sproul shared the message that the God of the Bible is one who plays for keeps, a realization that initially dawned on him during his 'virginal reading' of the scriptures. Sproul's conversion and subsequent ministry have impacted countless lives, leaving a legacy that points to Jesus as the one who transforms and redeems.
