Born in Richford, Vermont, in 1888, Robert Gilmour LeTourneau's early life was marked by challenges. Dropping out of school in seventh grade due to economic hardships, he labored in various fields, including iron foundry work and mechanics. Yet, it was a gospel crusade in Portland, Oregon, in 1905 that truly transformed his life. At 16, LeTourneau experienced a profound spiritual awakening. He recalled, "No bolts of lightning hit me... I just prayed to the Lord to save me, and then I was aware of another Presence. No words were spoken... all my bitterness was drained away, and I was filled with such a vast relief."
God's Business Partner Emerges
This encounter with God redirected his path. LeTourneau sought to serve Jesus not as a missionary, but as a businessman. Encouraged by his pastor, who advised that God needs businessmen too, he ventured into the realm of earthmoving equipment. Despite setbacks, including bankruptcy and a significant debt during the Great Depression, LeTourneau placed his trust in God. He refused to work on Sundays, even when pressured, believing in divine guidance over financial gain.
Holy Spirit Innovation and Success
LeTourneau's business flourished, and he became known as "the dean of earthmoving." He attributed his pioneering inventions to insights given by the Holy Spirit. His success was not just financial; it was also spiritual. LeTourneau and his wife, Evelyn, embraced a principle of giving 90% of their income to missions, living on the remaining 10%. He famously stated, "I shovel out the money, and God shovels it backβbut God has a bigger shovel."
Living the Christian Businessman Legacy
In 1946, LeTourneau founded LeTourneau Technical Institute in Longview, Texas, cementing his legacy in both education and faith. He believed deeply that a Christian businessman owes as much to God as a preacher does, and he lived this out by supporting missionary work across the globe.
Through his life and work, Robert Gilmour LeTourneau demonstrated that Jesus can indeed be the guiding partner in business, leading to innovation, prosperity, and a lasting impact on the world.
