Michael W. Smith, born in Kenova, West Virginia, embarked on a remarkable journey of faith and music. At ten, he made a commitment to follow Jesus, a decision that would lay the foundation for his future. However, the path was not without its trials.
Michael W Smith's Drug Addiction Crisis
After moving to Nashville in 1978 to pursue music, Michael's life spiraled out of control as he turned to drugs and alcohol. In a desperate moment, he snorted what he thought was cocaine, leading to a near-fatal overdose. It was then that he cried out, 'God, please don't let me die. I need a rescue because I believe You've got a call on my life.'
Divine Encounter on Kitchen Floor
This cry for help marked a turning point. In November 1979, Michael had a profound encounter with God on his kitchen floor, where he felt God's comforting presence. 'I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Abba was lying on the floor with His arm around me,' he shared. This moment of divine intervention led him to recommit his life to Christ.
Music Ministry Born from Redemption
Michael's transformation was evident as he began to pursue music with renewed purpose. By 1980, he signed his first songwriting contract, eventually touring with Amy Grant and releasing his own music. His first album, 'The Michael W. Smith Project,' debuted in 1983, marking the beginning of a successful career that would see him sell over 15 million albums and receive numerous awards.
Throughout his journey, Michael credits the prayers of his parents for his rescue, saying, 'I'm having this interview because of the prayers of my mom and dad.' Today, his ministry impacts countless lives through initiatives like Rocketown, a youth outreach center he founded.
Michael's story is one of redemption and purpose, demonstrating how Jesus can transform a life headed for destruction into one that shines brightly for Him.
