A Farmer's Son Called to China
Jonathan Goforth's journey into the heart of China was marked by both trials and triumphs, deeply rooted in his unwavering faith in Jesus. Born on a farm near Thorndale, Ontario, in 1859, Goforth experienced a spiritual awakening that would shape his destiny as a missionary. ## Revival Fire Spreads Across Manchuria
Inspired by George Leslie Mackay, he committed himself to a life of service, declaring, "Henceforth, my life belongs to Him who gave His life for me."
In 1888, Goforth and his wife, Rosalind, embarked on their mission in China, arriving in North Honan. The early years were fraught with challenges, including a cholera epidemic and the Boxer Rebellion, which they narrowly survived. Despite these trials, Goforth's dedication never wavered. He once expressed his reliance on divine intervention, saying, "The Lord called me to China, and I expect His Spirit to perform a miracle and to enable me to master the language."
Everything changed in 1907 after Goforth witnessed the Korean Revival, which ignited his passion for revivalism. By February 1908, this fervor had spread to Manchuria, where he led a movement that rapidly transformed communities. The revival was marked by widespread confession and repentance, as people openly acknowledged their wrongdoings and sought forgiveness.
Goforth's ministry was characterized by his deep reliance on prayer. He and Rosalind often prayed for divine assistance in their work, once kneeling together and asking God to send an evangelist. Their prayers were answered with the unexpected arrival of Wang Fulin, who became an invaluable partner in their mission.
Throughout his ministry, Goforth remained steadfast in his belief in Jesus' power to transform lives. His work in China led to thousands embracing faith, and he continued preaching even after losing his sight. "My deepest regret," he confessed, "is that I have not devoted more time to the study of the Bible," underscoring his lifelong commitment to spiritual growth.
Jonathan Goforth's legacy is a testament to the miraculous intervention of Jesus and the profound impact of unwavering faith. His life and work continue to inspire generations, reminding us all of the transformative power of a life dedicated to serving God.
