β€œI ran with the streets, led one of the most powerful crime families in America... but none of that gave me true peace. I always believed in God but this time, it was different. This time, I surrendered.”
Former mafia boss Salvatore Sammy the Bull Gravano in ocean waters sharing his Christian faith testimony as he came to Jesus and was set free.

Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano spent decades near the top of American organized crime. As underboss of the Gambino crime family he confessed to involvement in nineteen murders, later testified against John Gotti, and served years in prison on drug charges. Power, money, and fear were the currencies of his life. By his own account, none of it gave him peace.

On May 3, 2025, Gravano waded into the Pacific Ocean at Huntington Beach in front of a vast crowd. He was one of 7,752 people baptized that day at Baptize California, the mass baptism that kicked off the national Baptize America movement. Before Pastor Mark Francey lowered him into the water, Gravano told those gathered: "I ran with the streets, led one of the most powerful crime families in America... but none of that gave me true peace. I always believed in God but this time, it was different. This time, I surrendered."

That word, surrendered, carries real weight from a man whose survival once depended on never giving in. Gravano did not describe tidying up his life or adopting a religion. He described handing his whole self over to Jesus, the same Jesus who has been receiving violent and broken men since the thief on the cross, and finding in Him the peace that a crime empire never supplied.

The moment reached beyond him. FaithPot reports that a close friend of Gravano's gave his life to Christ and was baptized on the spot after hearing the testimony. Some onlookers cheered; many wiped away tears as both men made their public declarations of faith in the surf.

Gravano's story is a reminder that God's grace is not reserved for clean records. Jesus meets people whose past is public, violent, and seemingly beyond repair, and He offers them the same peace Gravano says he finally found. If Jesus can meet a confessed mafia underboss in the ocean at Huntington Beach and make him new, He can meet anyone, anywhere, exactly as they are.
