Shaun O'Sullivan: Saved on the Streets of Swindon, Now He Preaches on Them

The Day He Dropped to His Knees

🇬🇧Swindon, England, United Kingdom

Homeless at 15 and addicted to crack, heroin and alcohol by 16, Shaun O'Sullivan served prison time for armed robbery before the message of a Swindon street preacher he once heckled brought him to his knees in a church. Set free from addiction, he now leads Awaken International Ministries, preaching on the same streets through repeated arrests, including a 2025 jury acquittal at Swindon Crown Court.

Doxa is where Christians record what God has said and done, and return to remember it.

I dropped to my knees and that day I was born again.
Modern Swindon street preacher Shaun O'Sullivan shares his powerful testimony to a crowd outdoors after being freed from heroin addiction.

Shaun O'Sullivan's story starts in a car park. Homeless at 15, he slept where he could in Swindon. By 16 he was addicted to crack, heroin and alcohol. By 17 the drinking was causing seizures. The trajectory ended where it usually does, in prison, where he served time for armed robbery.

Through those years there was one fixed point in Swindon town centre: a street preacher named John Dunn. Shaun heckled him. By his own admission, the preacher drove him crazy. But you cannot heckle a man without hearing him, and what Shaun heard lodged somewhere the drugs could not reach.

The Day He Dropped to His Knees

After his release from prison, Shaun walked into a church. The message John Dunn had preached on the street, that God calls people to turn around and come home, came back to him. "I dropped to my knees and that day I was born again."

The addictions that had owned him since his mid-teens lost their grip. The armed robber who slept in a car park became a husband and a father. And then he became something nobody in Swindon town centre could have predicted: a street preacher, standing where John Dunn had stood. Today Shaun leads Awaken International Ministries in Swindon and preaches side by side with the man he once mocked.

Preaching Through Arrests

Preaching on British streets in the 2020s has cost him. Shaun has been arrested multiple times, on one occasion for telling passers-by that God loves them, on the grounds it might cause distress. In September 2024 he was charged with a religiously aggravated offence after a brief street exchange, a prosecution that cost twenty thousand pounds of public money.

In 2025 a jury at Swindon Crown Court acquitted him. The case collapsed when his accuser admitted what she had really disliked was that he spoke directly to her. Represented by the Christian Legal Centre, Shaun walked out of court free, and went back to preaching.

The Streets Remember

There is a symmetry in Shaun's story that is hard to miss. The gospel reached him on the streets of Swindon through a preacher he mocked. Now he carries the same gospel to the same streets, through the same mockery and worse, because he knows firsthand that somewhere in the crowd there may be a 16-year-old addict who is hearing every word.
