From Agnostic to Bible Study Convert
Francis Schaeffer's journey from agnosticism to a deeply rooted Christian faith is a testament to the transformative power of Scripture. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1912, Schaeffer grew up in a nominally Christian home. Dissatisfied with the answers provided by the liberal Presbyterian church he attended, he turned to philosophy during his high school years, seeking truth. However, it was through reading the Bible, beginning with Genesis, that he found the answers he sought. By 1930, after six months of intense study, Schaeffer was convinced of the Bible's truth and became a Christian.
His newfound faith led him to pursue education at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, despite initial opposition from his father. Graduating with high honors in 1935, Schaeffer went on to study at Westminster and Faith Theological Seminaries. He became the first ordained minister of the Bible Presbyterian Church, serving in Pennsylvania and Missouri. However, his faith was tested in the early 1950s when he experienced a deep spiritual crisis, questioning his ministry and the reality of God's work within Christians. Through prayer and a renewed dependency on God's Spirit, Schaeffer emerged with a deeper confidence in the truth of Christianity.
L'Abri Fellowship Switzerland Founded
In 1955, Schaeffer and his wife, Edith, founded L'Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. Their home became a refuge for those seeking answers to life's difficult questions, offering a blend of intellectual discussion and genuine Christian care. It was a place where faith was not only discussed but demonstrated through everyday living. People from diverse backgrounds and beliefs were welcomed, fostering an environment where Christian faith was seen as applicable to all areas of life.
Intellectual Christian Apologetics Method
Schaeffer's approach to apologetics was unique, emphasizing that Christianity provided a coherent foundation for truth and morality. His method, known as "Taking the Roof Off," exposed contradictions in secular thinking, leading many to consider the truth of Christianity. His influence extended beyond L'Abri, impacting evangelical engagement in societal issues such as abortion and secular humanism.
Lasting Impact Through Ministry
Francis Schaeffer's legacy continues through the ongoing ministry of L'Abri, which now has branches in nine countries. His life and work remain a powerful demonstration of how Jesus can transform a life and use it to impact countless others, drawing them closer to God.
