Humble Beginnings on Rote Island
Born on December 29, 1928, in the humble setting of Laes, Rote Island, Indonesia, Petrus Octavianus grew up amidst the challenges of poverty and the loss of his father at a tender age. Despite these early hardships, Petrus was determined to pursue education and sold firewood, water, and snacks to support his schooling. This perseverance led him to become the Director of a Christian High School and Teacher Training College in Malang, East Java at the age of 26.
A Life-Changing Call to Ministry
However, his life took a transformative turn on June 25, 1959. Inspired by a spiritual speech from Joy Ridehof, a 73-year-old American missionary, Petrus sensed a profound calling from God to dedicate his life to full-time ministry. Leaving behind a promising career in education, he founded the Indonesian Missionary Foundation (YPPII) on March 3, 1961, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Reaching 80 Countries for Christ
Petrus traveled to over 80 countries, spreading the Gospel and introducing Indonesia to the world. His work led to the founding of 19 nonprofit organizations, including hospitals and orphanages that fostered 37,000 children. He once said, "A person's greatness does not lie in the title he has, but in how deeply he wants to obey God," underscoring his commitment to serving others.
Steadfast Through Persecution
His ministry was not without challenges. During his studies in Surabaya, he faced arrest on false suspicions of espionage. Yet, Petrus remained steadfast, driven by his motto: "LIVE FOR GOD AND OTHERS, TO SAVE GENERATIONS IN THE FUTURE."
Through his obedience to God's call, Petrus Octavianus became a beacon of faith and hope, touching countless lives across the globe. He passed away on March 30, 2014, but his legacy of faith and service continues to inspire many. Jesus transformed the life of a shepherd boy into a global evangelist, and Petrus gave all the glory to God.
