A Gifted Speaker Loses His Way
Charles Sydney Price, born in Sheffield, England in 1887, was a prominent figure in the early 20th-century Pentecostal movement. His life was marked by a profound transformation from skeptic to passionate evangelist, a journey defined by a dramatic encounter with God's power. Raised in a Christian family, Price initially showed promise as a gifted speaker. However, his early religious convictions waned as he pursued law studies and embraced modernist theology, which dismissed the authority of the Bible and the miraculous. "I got to the point where I could explain every religious emotion from the standpoint of psychology," he admitted, feeling spiritually ineffective in his role as a Congregationalist pastor.
The Turning Point of 1921
The turning point came in 1921, when Price, then the pastor at First Congregational Church in Lodi, California, set out to disprove a Pentecostal revival led by Aimee Semple McPherson in San Jose. Expecting to debunk the events, Price instead witnessed undeniable healings that challenged his skepticism. "All during the opening part of the service I was conscious of God speaking to my heart," he later recounted. Overcome with conviction, Price experienced a profound personal conversion. "An ocean of love divine rolled across my heart," he described, as he surrendered himself to God, shouting with joy, "I am saved—Hallelujah!"
Following this transformative encounter, Price returned to his church, sharing his experience and leading many to seek God. His testimony inspired numerous conversions and the formation of the 'Lodi Gospel Team.' Price ultimately left the Congregationalists to establish Lodi Bethel Temple, where he began a ministry marked by miraculous healings and widespread evangelistic outreach. His ministry extended across the United States, Canada, and beyond, using a tent dubbed the "Kanvas Katherdral" to accommodate the crowds.
Throughout his ministry, Price consistently pointed to Jesus as the source of healing and deliverance. He urged people to look beyond the human instrument to Christ, in whom they could find true freedom from suffering. Through his publications, including the 'Golden Grain' periodical, Price's teachings reached thousands, emphasizing the reality of God's power and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit.
