A World of Skepticism
Nicky Gumbel, born in London in 1955, was steeped in a world of law and skepticism. Raised by a family with deep roots in the legal profession, Nicky's early life was marked by atheism and a keen intellect trained to argue against the existence of God. His father's escape from Nazi Germany and his mother's nominal Christian faith did little to sway his conviction that religion was irrelevant.
Unexpected Encounter
While studying law at Cambridge in 1974, Nicky's worldview was challenged when two friends embraced Christianity. Determined to understand their decision, he began investigating various faiths. The Bible, which he initially opened to critique, captivated him instead. 'I was enthralled,' Nicky recounted, 'It was as if I had found what I had been looking for all my life.'
As he read the New Testament, Nicky encountered Jesus in a way that defied his expectations. He found answers to life's pressing questions about death, purpose, and guilt. Despite fears that Christianity would curtail his joy, he sensed a divine urgency: 'now or never'. He chose to embrace faith, experiencing a profound transformation that filled the void he had long felt.
From Law to Ministry
Nicky's newfound relationship with God ignited a passion to share this truth with others, particularly those who, like his former self, dismissed Christianity. After ten years practicing law, he pursued ordination in the Church of England, believing his calling was to spread the message of Jesus.
Alpha Goes Global
In 1990, he assumed leadership of the Alpha Course at Holy Trinity Brompton, transforming it into a global phenomenon. Under his guidance, the course expanded beyond church walls to prisons, businesses, and communities worldwide, reaching millions.
Nicky's journey from skeptic to faith leader illustrates the power of encountering Jesus firsthand. His commitment to sharing God's love continues to leave a lasting impact, as evidenced by the enduring success of the Alpha Course and his ongoing ministry. 'Reading about Jesus completely changed my life,' Nicky affirmed, giving all glory to God.
