Surprise Sithole was born in the late 1960s into an animist family in the village of Cachote, Mozambique. He grew up in a world where the spirit realm was real but the name of Jesus was unknown. When he encountered the gospel as a young man, everything changed. Not gradually. Completely.
From Animism to the Fire of the Holy Spirit
Sithole connected with Heidi and Rolland Baker's Iris Ministries in the mid-1990s and became the pastoral director for Iris Global across southern Africa. What followed was not a comfortable ministry career. It was a life that reads like the book of Acts — village by village, prayer by prayer, miracle by miracle.
He has documented eight cases of people raised from the dead through prayer. Not metaphorically. Clinically dead. Returned to life.
The Day Francis Shongwe Came Back
The most well-documented case is pastor Francis Shongwe. In September 2003, Shongwe was violently beaten by a gang and left for dead. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. His body was prepared for burial.
But Sithole and the Iris community prayed. They did not accept what the medical report said. They asked the Holy Spirit to do what no doctor could.
Francis woke up. His clothes were soaked in blood, but his body was healed. He went on to share his testimony in the documentary *Finger of God*, and continues to pastor in Mozambique to this day.
The Holy Spirit Is Not Limited
Sithole does not take credit for what happened. He is direct about that. "I have seen eight people come back from death," he says. "Not because of me. Because the Holy Spirit is not limited by what we call impossible."
His life story — from animist village to pastoral director overseeing thousands of churches — is documented in his book *Voice in the Night*. The miracles are not the point. The point is that the Holy Spirit is still doing what He has always done: bringing life where there is death, freedom where there is bondage, and hope where there is none.
What This Means for You
If the Holy Spirit can raise the dead in a Mozambican village, He can reach you where you are. Whatever feels lifeless — a dream, a relationship, your own faith — is not beyond His reach. The same Spirit that hovered over the waters at creation is hovering over your situation right now.
