Tom Landry, the legendary head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was a man renowned not only for his coaching prowess but also for his steadfast faith in Jesus Christ. Born in Mission, Texas, in 1924, Landry's early life was marked by athletic success and military service. He served as a B-17 pilot during World War II, completing over 30 combat missions. Despite these accomplishments, by the age of 35, Landry felt a profound restlessness and emptiness, even as he neared the pinnacle of his coaching career.
Bible Study Changes Everything
Landry had attended church throughout his life, but as he admitted, "Until you make that commitment to devote your life to Christ, you are not a Christian." It was in 1959, through the invitation of a friend to a Bible study, that Landry's life took a transformative turn. Initially skeptical, he attended the study sessions in Dallas, where he was challenged by the words of Jesus: "Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you." As Landry studied the Bible, he realized, "When I started to really study the Bible, I found out that only Jesus Christ could fill the void and restlessness in my life."
Coaching with Christian Faith
Landry's commitment to Christ marked the beginning of a new chapter. He became the head coach of the Cowboys in 1960, describing himself as both a "rookie head coach and a rookie Christian." He prioritized his faith over football, creating a Christian atmosphere within his team without imposing his beliefs. His dedication to his faith was evident in his involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where he served on the National Board of Trustees and became a spokesperson, sharing his story and inspiring others.
Faith Through Life's Trials
When Landry was fired from the Cowboys, he attributed his resilience to his faith, stating, "God always picks me up," and "Jesus and God was still No. 1 in my heart." His life after coaching was filled with continued ministry work, teaching Sunday School, and speaking engagements.
Tom Landry's legacy is not just in the annals of football history but also in his testimony of faith. As Billy Graham noted, Landry was "one of the greatest Christian gentlemen I ever knew." His life serves as a testament to the transformative power of Jesus Christ, who filled the void in Landry's life and guided him through both triumphs and trials.
