Early Life During Segregation
Tony Evans, born in Baltimore on September 10, 1949, grew up during a time of segregation and racial tension. As a child, he felt the weight of inequality, believing he was seen as a second-class citizen. However, his life began to change when his parents became Christians, a transformation that brought reconciliation to his family and introduced young Tony to the teachings of the Bible. His father's newfound faith set a precedent for Tony, shaping his future ministry.
Building a Kingdom Ministry
In 1976, Tony founded the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas, starting with just ten members in his home. Under his leadership, the church flourished, growing to over 10,000 members. He also established The Urban Alternative, a ministry dedicated to teaching Christian principles, and became a prominent voice on the radio with 'The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans.' His 'kingdom agenda' philosophy encouraged believers to apply biblical teachings to all aspects of life.
Pastor Restoration After Failure
Despite his success, Tony faced personal challenges. In 2024, he resigned from his position as senior pastor due to an undisclosed sin. He acknowledged, "falling short of God's standard" and underwent a period of church discipline and restoration. This time allowed him to repent and seek healing. In October 2025, he was publicly restored to ministry, though he chose not to return as senior pastor.
Faith Journey Continues Forward
Tony's journey demonstrates the power of faith to overcome adversity. He once shared, 'When He's first, then He places me in a second position that's above the class that I was given by other men.' His story is one of resilience and the transformative power of Jesus, who provided healing and restoration. Tony continues to share his message of redemption, emphasizing the importance of aligning one's life with God's principles.
