Childhood Abuse and Trauma
Joyce Meyer, born in 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, has become a beacon of hope for many through her ministry, but her journey began in the shadows of abuse. Joyce's childhood was fraught with fear and shame, as her father, returning from World War II, subjected her to years of sexual abuse. As she courageously revealed, "Literally, what he did was rape me, every week, at least once a week, until the time I was 18." Her mother, aware yet paralyzed by fear, did not intervene, leaving Joyce to grapple with feelings of worthlessness and shame.
Divine Intervention and Healing
Despite this harrowing start, Joyce's life took a pivotal turn in 1976. While driving to work, she experienced a profound moment of divine intervention. As she later reflected, "It's true my father abused me... But God always had a plan for my life, and He has redeemed me." This encounter deepened her faith and spurred her to study the Bible, which revealed the lies she had believed and the truths she needed to embrace.
Ministry Born from Testimony
In 1985, Joyce launched her ministry, initially called "Life in the Word," from humble beginnings teaching a Bible class in a local cafeteria. Her message of forgiveness and healing resonated, leading to the global reach of Joyce Meyer Ministries. Joyce shares her story with the hope that others will find solace and restoration through Jesus, stating, "I share my testimony now because I know there are so many who have experienced something similar... and they need to know God loves them and wants to restore their life."
