A Student's Dedication
Oscar Muriu's journey to faith began in 1983 while studying Zoology at the University of Delhi in India. It was there that he dedicated his life to Jesus, a decision that would radically change his future. Feeling a profound calling from God to enter ministry, Oscar was approached in the late 1980s to consider pastoring Nairobi Chapel, a church with roots tracing back to 1952.
From 20 to Thousands
Under Oscar's leadership, Nairobi Chapel experienced remarkable growth. When he took over as senior pastor in 1991, the congregation was a small group of 20. However, through Jesus' intervention and Oscar's dedication, the church grew to over 3,000 members. By 2020, the Nairobi Chapel Association of Churches had planted over 200 churches, a number that expanded to more than 280 by 2025.
A Vision for Church Planting
Oscar Muriu, known for his passion for leadership development, often said, "If you have the people, you will plant churches." His vision was clear: to extend God's Kingdom and transform lives through church planting. In 2000, when the church was contemplating a move to a larger property, they instead felt led to plant multiple congregations. This decision, bathed in prayer, led to the establishment of new churches across Kenya, demonstrating God's provision and guidance.
Raising Leaders
Oscar's commitment to raising leaders is encapsulated in his aspiration: "I pray I can raise at least 1000 world class leaders in that time!" His journey was not without challenges. He faced burnout, but through prayer and reliance on God, he found recovery and renewed passion for his calling.
Oscar Muriu's story is a testament to God's power and faithfulness. His leadership not only transformed Nairobi Chapel but also had a global impact through church planting. To this day, he credits Jesus for every success, stating, "God is in heaven and he does whatever pleases him... That's a God I want to serve."
