Humble Beginnings
Dwight Lyman Moody's journey from a humble beginning in Northfield, Massachusetts, to becoming a world-renowned evangelist is a testament to the power of faith and divine intervention. Born on February 5, 1837, Moody grew up in poverty after his father's untimely death. Leaving home at 17, he sought fortune in Boston, working at his uncle's shoe store. Initially indifferent to religion, Moody's life took a pivotal turn on April 21, 1855, when his Sunday school teacher, Edward Kimball, visited him at the store.
A Soul Awakened
Kimball shared the message of Jesus with Moody, who later recalled, 'I had not felt I had a soul till then.' This encounter marked the beginning of Moody's spiritual transformation. He described the profound change, saying, 'I thought the old sun shone a good deal brighter than it ever had before.' Despite initial doubts and a lack of biblical knowledge, Moody's newfound faith led him to pursue a life dedicated to God.
Building a Ministry
Moving to Chicago in 1856, Moody established a Sunday school for underprivileged children and became involved with the YMCA. His ministry expanded, and he eventually founded The Moody Church. During the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, his church and home were destroyed, prompting Moody to intensify his commitment to evangelism. Partnering with gospel singer Ira Sankey, Moody's dynamic speaking style drew large crowds across the United States and the UK.
The Holy Spirit's Power
Moody's encounter with the Holy Spirit further transformed his ministry. He once said, 'God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand.' This empowerment led to countless conversions and the founding of educational institutions such as the Moody Bible Institute. Through his life and work, D.L.
