β€œBy God's grace, I made the most important decision a person can ever make. I invited Jesus Christ to be Lord of my life and made a commitment to follow Him.”
Christian athlete Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey shares his testimony overcoming suicidal thoughts in Nashville. God transformed baseball career.

Early Trauma and Baseball Setbacks

Robert Allen Dickey, born on October 29, 1974, in Nashville, Tennessee, faced a life filled with challenges and unexpected turns. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1996, Dickey's dreams were shattered when a physical exam revealed he lacked a crucial ligament in his elbow. This discovery drastically reduced his signing bonus and plunged him into a period of professional uncertainty. However, Dickey's journey was marked by more profound struggles. At just eight years old, he was sexually abused by a babysitter and later by a teenage male. This trauma, compounded by his parents' separation, left him grappling with loneliness and identity issues.

Overcoming Suicidal Thoughts Through Faith

Professionally, Dickey's initial baseball career was fraught with difficulty. His fastball couldn't secure him a lasting spot in Major League Baseball, and he spent years in the minor leagues. A pivotal low came on June 9, 2007, when he hit rock bottom, spiritually and relationally, struggling with guilt from marital infidelity and even contemplating suicide. At his darkest moment, Dickey rigged his car for asphyxiation but was interrupted by a profound sense that God had more in store for him. This divine intervention was a turning point.

Divine Intervention and Renewed Purpose

In 2007, an attempt to prove his worth by jumping into the Missouri River nearly cost him his life. Instead, it became a humbling experience that recharged his faith. Dickey had embraced Christianity at 13, but it was these moments of crisis that deepened his reliance on God. He shared, "By God's grace, I made the most important decision a person can ever make. I invited Jesus Christ to be Lord of my life and made a commitment to follow Him."

God Transformed Baseball Career

With renewed faith, Dickey learned to throw a knuckleball, a pitch that defies conventional baseball wisdom. This transformation led to a remarkable resurgence in his career. In 2012, at 38, he won the National League Cy Young Award with the New York Mets, becoming the first knuckleballer to achieve this honor. He led the league in strikeouts, innings pitched, and complete games, finishing with a stellar 20-6 record.

Beyond the baseball field, Dickey became a vocal advocate for victims of abuse and shared his story through his autobiography, "Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball." He also engaged in humanitarian work, including trips to India to assist orphans, demonstrating his commitment to living out his faith.

Dickey remains candid about his journey, acknowledging that "God does not promise you will never again experience trials...but He tells us to rejoice in our sufferings." His story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, the resilience of the human spirit, and the grace of God that allowed him to overcome profound adversity.
