Genesis 8 ends the flood with a first altar and a permanent promise, and the promise rests on one repeated Hebrew word. The reason God gives for never flooding the earth again, the evil yetser of the human heart, is word for word the reason He gave for sending the flood. Humanity stayed exactly the same. The altar is what changed. The olah and its reyach nichoach, the pleasing aroma, run straight to the fragrant offering of Christ.

Then he builds the first altar in Scripture, and over its smoke God makes a promise that still holds every spring, that seedtime and harvest will never cease. The surprise is the reason God gives, and where the altar points.

God remembering, zakar, is covenant faithfulness going into action, and the rescue that follows is written as a second creation. The ruach, the same wind and Spirit that hovered over the water in Genesis 1, moves over the flood until dry land rises and a dove carries back the first green leaf, the oldest picture of the new creation in Christ.

In Genesis 8 the rain has stopped but the water still covers the world, and eight people wait in a wooden box over a drowned earth. Then one line turns everything. God remembered Noah. In Scripture, God remembering is God moving on a promise He already made, the same wind over the water that started the world and points ahead to Jesus.
